Cock Rings and Penis Pumps: A Practical Guide

Cock rings are one of the simplest, cheapest aids for erection firmness. Pumps are more specialised. Here is what to know.

Short answer: start with a stretchy silicone or TPR ring, and use it for no more than about 30 minutes. Pumps are an accessory rather than a treatment, and should be used cautiously.

Cock rings

A cock ring is worn at the base of the penis. By restricting blood flow back out of the penis, it can help maintain an erection and sometimes makes it feel firmer. Vibrating versions add stimulation for both partners.

Penis pumps

A pump draws blood into the penis using suction and is used by some men for temporary firmness. Bathmate-style pumps use water; others use a bulb or pistol grip. They do not treat erectile dysfunction, and results are temporary.

Frequently asked questions

Do cock rings work?

For many men they help maintain an erection for longer. They do not create one.

How long can you wear a cock ring?

No more than about 30 minutes. Remove it at once if it hurts or you notice colour changes.

Do penis pumps increase size permanently?

There is no good evidence that they do. Effects are temporary.

Are cock rings safe?

Generally, when stretchy, correctly sized and used for a short time. Avoid if you have a circulatory problem or take blood thinners without asking a doctor.
