Water-Based vs Silicone vs Hybrid Lubricant

Lubricant is the cheapest way to make sex more comfortable at any age. Here is how to pick the right type.

Short answer: start with a water-based lubricant. It is safe with condoms and every type of toy, and it washes off. Move to silicone or a hybrid if you want something that lasts longer or works in water.

The three types compared

Water-based

The all-rounder. Safe with latex and non-latex condoms and with silicone toys; washes off easily and does not stain. It can dry out or absorb into the skin, so reapply. Look for glycerin-free and paraben-free formulas if you are sensitive.

Silicone

Slicker and longer lasting; works in the bath or shower. Do not use it with silicone toys, as it can degrade the surface. May stain fabrics. Needs soap and water to remove.

Hybrid

A mix of water and silicone: longer-lasting than water-based, easier to clean than pure silicone. Avoid with silicone toys.

Which one for which situation?

A word on oils

Oil-based products (baby oil, coconut oil, Vaseline) can damage latex condoms and are not advised internally. Skip them unless you are using non-latex condoms and know what you are doing.

Frequently asked questions

Which lubricant is best with condoms?

Water-based or silicone. Avoid oil-based products with latex condoms, as they weaken the latex.

Can I use silicone lubricant with a silicone toy?

No. It can break down the toy's surface. Use water-based lubricant with silicone toys.

What is a hybrid lubricant?

A blend of water and silicone that lasts longer than water-based alone but is easier to wash off than silicone alone.

Is glycerin bad in lubricant?

Glycerin can irritate some people and may contribute to yeast infections in those who are prone to them. Glycerin-free formulas are an easy choice if you are sensitive.

How much lubricant should I use?

More than you think. Start with a generous amount and reapply when it starts to feel dry.
